Lake Bala
25 June 2007
What a wash out the Lake Bala Open Water Competition 2007 was. Our squad had prepared themselves for the cold and wet of the lake but, like everyone else, hadn’t considered they would already be cold and wet before they even got into the water.
Not being able to be there myself I’d been glued to the Bala webcam which was refreshing every 20 seconds. The race start at 2pm was fast approaching - then, at precisely 1342 hrs it gave up the ghost and froze too!
Despite the worst weather conditions since time began (felt like it anyway and that’s what matters), our steadfast swimmers, got in, started swimming - and gritted their teeth. Phew, ‘twould be surprising if the Channel conditions were as harsh! In the end it was the ASA referee that pulled the race.
Many many thanks to all those who did take pictures and sent them in so quickly.
